Three Sisters: September 4, 2008

September 4, 2008

So what am I reading now? The first volume of Three Sisters Island trilogy by Nora Roberts. I’m about halfway through it, and I’m enjoying, but I’m fairly sure it’s not going to be one of my favorites. My problem in the past has been that the island isn’t anything like the Massachusetts I know, and I’ve opened the first book looking for something like the Salem, MA I used to live in. (Yes, I know, Three Sisters Island isn’t Salem, but it was once part of Salem, so . . . )

This time, I opened it knowing I wasn’t going to find my Salem. There are things in the book that make me think of the Amity townspeople in the first Jaws movie, and I’ve found myself picturing both Martha’s Vineyard (which I’ve only been to once) and Newburyport, MA, which I drive to regularly. So that’s been fine. There have been little things that have distanced me — some people have said “Ayah” instead of yes. No one that I know of says “Ayah” in Massachusetts — as far as I know, it’s a Maine thing. In fact, I didn’t know how to say it until I heard it on PBS.

But still, it’s Nora Roberts, with her amazing ability to get me to really care about her characters, so that I’ll stay up way too late to find out what happens to them, even when I know they’ll be all right. When I’m in the mood for Roberts, no one else will do.
