Ahh, Bliss: September 16, 2008

September 16, 2008

Some writing friends and I have been talking about how hard it is to find books we enjoy reading, now that we know as much as we do about the craft of writing. When you’ve spent years studying craft, you see it clearly when things aren’t done well, and that just wrecks your pleasure in a book.

Because I am a reader just slightly more than a writer, this is maddening…but I also think it makes me that much happier when I do find a book that completely sucks me in.

Yesterday and today, I’ve been reading Nora Roberts’ latest, Tribute, and it’s one of those books that makes me happy because it’s sucked me in. I only have about 20 pages left. and I’ve enjoyed every minute of reading it. I read a meh review of it a few months ago, so I wasn’t sure I’d like it. I’m not even sure right now why I reserved it from the library, and I know I only started it because I knew I wouldn’t be able to renew it when it came due. But this might well be my favorite Nora Roberts of all. In fact, I’m thinking about buying it in hardcover, instead of waiting for the paperback.

I have almost no book-buying money, so this is huge.

Of course, now the question is what will I read afterwards?
